The Divine Service
Lutheran worship is shaped by centuries of Christian tradition, centered on God's action toward us in Word and Sacrament rather than our performance for God. The Divine Service follows a liturgical order that has roots in the early Christian church, reformed and purified by Luther to center all worship on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Our worship includes the reading and preaching of Holy Scripture, corporate confession of sin and absolution, the singing of hymns drawn from the rich Lutheran tradition, recitation of the creed, and — on communion Sundays — the celebration of the Lord's Supper.
Visitors are always welcome. If you are unfamiliar with Lutheran liturgy, simply follow along in the bulletin. The pastor and members are glad to answer any questions.
Elements of the Service
Scripture Readings
Old Testament, Epistle, and Gospel readings follow the historic Lutheran lectionary.
Proclamation of the Word
The sermon proclaims the Law and the Gospel from Holy Scripture.
Lutheran Hymnody
We sing from the Lutheran Service Book and other historic Lutheran hymnals.
Corporate Confession
We confess our sins and receive the assurance of God's forgiveness in absolution.
The Creed
We confess the Nicene or Apostles' Creed, uniting us with Christians across the ages.
The First Sacrament
Holy Baptism
"Baptism now saves you." — 1 Peter 3:21
We confess with Luther that Baptism is "not just plain water, but it is the water included in God's command and combined with God's word." In Baptism, God works forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.
We baptize infants as well as adults, trusting God's promise that this Sacrament works faith and delivers from sin. Parents who wish to have their child baptized are encouraged to contact the church office.
The Second Sacrament
The Lord's Supper
"This is my body... This is my blood." — Matthew 26:26–28
In the Lord's Supper, we receive the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, truly present under the bread and wine — a sacramental union unlike any other. This is the real presence (the Lutheran position distinct from both Rome and the Reformed).
We practice close communion, admitting to the table those who are members of ELS congregations or sister synods in fellowship with the ELS. Visitors are invited to speak with the pastor for more information.
